There are non-chemical means of controlling pests as illustrated by this trap. Integrated Pest Management uses strategies such as economic thresholds and pest monitoring to determine timing for pesticide applications. For example, by using traps to monitor the tobacco budworm, growers in North Carolina have reduced pesticide use against the pest by 53 percent. Tomato growers in California using an IPM program have increased their net returns by about $7.00 per acre and decreased their insecticide use by 22 percent. There are many other examples.
