Dear Bill:
Re: FIFRA 2(ee) Recommendation - Use of Basagran Herbicide (EPA Reg. No.
7969-45) at Less Than Labeled Rates for Control of Velvetleaf and Hairy
Nightshade in Snap and Dry Beans
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has approved
your request for a FIFRA 2(ee) recommendation for use of Basagran Herbicide
(EPA Reg. No. 7969-45) at less than labeled rates on snap and dry beans for
control of velvetleaf and hairy nightshade. Enclosed is a copy of the accepted
recommendation.
Anyone using Basagran Herbicide under this recommendation must have the
recommendation in their possession at the time of application.
If you have any questions on this matter, please contact Jeanine
Broughel, of my staff, at (518) 457-7446.
                                            Sincerely,
                                            Maureen P. Serafini

                    Proposed FIFRA 2(ee) Recommendation
Researcher and Title: Robin R. Bellinder, Associate Professor, Department of
Fruit and Vegetable Science, Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853.
Pesticide Name and EPA Registration No.: Bentazon Basagran 4S (7969-45)
Proposed Application Rate: 0.25 lb ai/A (1/2 pint of product) to be applied
broadcast, postemergence to snap and dry beans having an expanded first
trifoliate leaf and when velvetleaf and hairy nightshade are in the cotyledon
to 2-true leaf stage.
Nature of the 2(ee) Variation from the Product Label: The chemical is
currently labelled for application of 0.5 lb ai/A (1 pint of product) when the
first trifoliate leaf of beans has expanded. This recommendation is for a
lower rate of bentazon for early control of velvetleaf and hairy nightshade,
species which research has shown are very susceptible to bentazon at the
cotyledon to 2-true leaf stage. These weeds, if they exceed the 2-leaf stage,
and less sensitive weed species may not be controlled by this low rate.
Complete Recommendation: A single application at the 0.25 lb ai (1/2 pint of
product) bentazon will effectively control small velvetleaf and hairy
nightshade. Careful timing of the application is critical as this low rate
will not control velvetleaf and may only suppress hairy nightshade having 4-6
leaves. A second application of the low rate may be required to control these
weeds when they emerge after the first application and before the bean crop
develops its full canopy.
