AB Responses of shrubs and hardwoods to 9 aerial herbicide
treatments were evaluated in a replicated conifer-release experiment
   in a 7-year-old spruce-fir clearcut in west-central Maine. All
herbicides and rates of application reduced hardwood and shrub cover
by 50% or more in year 9, 2 years after treatment. Cow more than 1.9
m tall was nearly eliminated by treatments with triclopyr amine
(Garlon 3A), glyphosate (Roundup), or a high rate of 2,4,5-T.
Phenoxy herbicides (2,4-D and 2,4,5-T) led to short-term reductions
in birches, maples, aspen, and raspberry and little change in
willows. Pin cherry was also controlled by these treatments but died
out before year 76, regardless of whether it was sprayed. Untreated
controls increased in total cover by about 50% between years 7 and 9
and also in abundance of cover > 1.5 m tall. Much cover less than
1.5 m tall was left by all treatments other than triclopyr at a high
rate. By the 16th year, major differences in height and cover still
existed all treatments and the controls.

AB Responses of conifers and other vegetation to 9 aerial
herbicide treatments urn evaluated in a replicated conifer-release
experiment in a 7-year-old spruce-fir clearcut in central Maine.
Development of the naturally regenerated conifers nifers was
inversely related to residual hardwood cover and conifer stocking
during the 9 years after treatment. All herbicides and rates of
application initially reduced hardwood cover by 50% or more. Cover
more than 1.5 m tall was nearly eliminated by several treatments, and
re-eliminated from overlopping provided long-term increase in conifer
growth. Untreated hardwoods severely reduced dominance and stocking
of conifers by age 16. Spruce heights and diameters were less
affected by hardwood competition than were those of fir; current
growth in released fir was greater than that in released spruce; but
unreleased spruce, where present, grew greater than unreleased fir.
Conifer growth was affected both by residual hardwood overtopping and
by number of conifers within 0.91 m.

AB Buffalograss Buchloe dactyloides (Nutt.) Engelm. is a
turfgrass species traditionally adapted to low-rainfall areas that
may incur unacceptable weed encroachment when grown in higher
rainfall areas such as Florida. An experiment was performed to
evaluate the tolerance of two new buffalograss cultivars, 'Oasis' and
'Prairie', to postemergence herbicides commonly used for grass,
broadleaf, and sedge weed control. Twenty to 40 days were required
for each cultivar to recover from treatment with asulam, MSMA, and
   sethoxydim (2.24, 2.24, and 0.56 kg.ha-1, respectively). Other
herbicides used for postemergence grass weed control (metsulfuron,
   quinclorac, and diclofop at 0.017, 0.56, and 1.12 kg.ha-1,
respectively) did not cause unacceptable buffalograss injury.
Herbicides used for postemergence broadleaf weed control, triclopyr,
   2,4-D, sulfometuron, dicamba (0.56, 1.12, 0.017, and 0.56 kg.ha-1,
   respectively), and a three-way combination of 2,4-D + dicamba +
   mecoprop (1.2 + 0.54 + 0.13 kg.ha-1), caused 20 to 30 days of
unacceptable or marginally acceptable turfgrass quality, while 20
days were required for 'Prairie' buffalograss to recover from
atrazine treatments. 'Oasis' buffalograss did not fully recover from
   2,4-D or 2,4-D + dicamba + mecoprop through 40 days after treatment.
Herbicides used for postemergence sedge control, bentazon and
imazaquin, caused slightly reduced, but acceptable, levels of turf
quality in both cultivars throughout the experiment.

AB Greenhouse and field experiments were conducted to
evaluate clopyralid formulations and triclopyr ester alone and in
mixtures for control of honey mesquite. In the greenhouse the
butoxyethyl ester of triclopyr enhanced activity of the
monoethanolamine salt of clopyralid when applied as mixtures for
total rates of 210 to 630 g ae ha-1. Greenhouse activity of
triclopyr was not enhanced with the addition of clopyralid. In the
field, 1989 applications of these same formulations, mixtures, and
rates were usually synergistic, with each mixture killing more plants
than the combined effect of either herbicide applied alone. For
example, clopyralid plus triclopyr at 140 plus 140 g ae ha-1 killed
87% of the plants. When applied alone at 140 g ha-1 neither
herbicide killed >27% of the plants. Honey mesquite response to the
potassium or oleylamine salt of clopyralid was similar to the
monoethanolamine salt when applied alone or in mixtures with
triclopyr ester. Effectiveness of these mixtures in 1990 was similar
to the 1988 and 1989 applications except that two to three times more
herbicide was required for high mortality in 1990 because of
unfavorable environment and plant growth prior to treatment.

AB We censused breeding nongame birds on replicated 5- and
6-year post herbicide-treated (tebuthiuron and triclopyr) and
untreated cross timbers rangeland in central Oklahoma. Twenty
species of breeding birds were observed. No treatment effects were
   detected for total bird density, species diversity, or richness;
however, species composition varied considerably among treatments.
Control sites supported species associated with closed canopy
woodlands, and treated sites supported species associated with brushy
and prairie habitat. Generally, control sites had greater foliar
cover, fewer snags, and less slash and herbaceous cover than treated
sites. Densities of 6 of the 7 most abundant bird species were
correlated variously with habitat variables. We concluded that
changes in habitat structure resulted in differences in bird species
   composition among treatments.

Picloram, triclopyr, glyphosate, and metsulfuron were applied at
three rates during three growth stages (vegetative, bud, and flower)
to evaluate the rate by growth stage interaction. Picloram was
equally effective over all growth stages when applied at 1.1 or 2.2
kg ae ha-1. Metsulfuron was most effective when applied in the
vegetative stage; 0.035 kg ai ha-1 killed 95% of duncecap larkspur,
but 0.14 kg ha-1 was required to kill the same percentage of tall
larkspur. Glyphosate at less than or equal to 2.2 kg ai ha-1 was
least effective when applied in the flower stage compared to earlier
growth stages. Triclopyr showed variable control at rates from 1.1
   to 4.5 kg ae ha-1.

AB At present, there are five herbicides (2,4-D, glyphosate,
hexazinone. simazine, and triclopyr) available to forest managers in
Canada. It is unlikely that any new active ingredients will be
registered for forestry in the foreseeable future. The only
additions likely are extensions of existing labels (e.g., aerial
application of Pronone and Release) and registration of new
formulations (e.g., Velpar ULW). Research in the short term future
will concentrate on improving efficacy, efficiency and versatility,
and reducing environmental impact of currently registered products.
Some of the current work is described.

AB Height, diameter, volume, and survival response of
4-yr-old loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) was compared for chemical and
mechanical site preparation treatments. Early-summer (June) and
late-summer (September) treatments were installed in separate
randomized complete block experiments. Either Tordon K or Tordon 101
in combination with Garlon and the three-pass mechanical treatments
provided the best growth and survival in the early-summer study, but
Tordon 101 + Garlon 4 was the most cost-effective. The Tordon
K-Garlon combination, Roundup, and the two-pass mechanical treatments
provided the best growth and survival in the late-summer study, with
Tordon K + Garlon 4 being the most cost-effective treatment tested in
the late summer study. Models were developed to predict mean height,
diameter, and volume per acre from age, sum of crown heights for
dogwood, natural pines, red oak, and sweetgum, and an indicator for
total vegetation control. Cover of the herbaceous components was
negatively correlated with hardwood density, and did not
significantly improve predictions of pine response.

on excised Pacific madrone (Arbutus menziesii Pursh.) and giant
chinkapin Castanopsis chrysophylla (Dougl.) A. DC. leaves and glass
microscope slides was determined in a factorial laboratory
experiment. Factors were temperature (10, 25, and 40 degrees C),
illumination (light or dark), and time (from 0 to about 4100 min in
820-min increments). Triclopyr BEE penetration into chinkapin leaves
is greater than into madrone leaves at all temperatures. Foliar
penetration into madrone leaves did not increase between 25 and 40
degrees C. Losses in the dark were greatest from glass slides and
least from chinkapin. Triclopyr BEE loss from chinkapin leaves at 40
degrees C in the light was equivalent to loss in the dark at 40
degrees C. Losses of triclopyr BEE from both glass slides and madrone
leaves were greater in the light treatments. Models were developed
by using mass balance coefficients. Results from outdoor exposures
fell within 95 % confidence intervals of model predictions of
   triclopyr BEE fate.

Sprague & Riley), and guazima (Guazuma ulmifolia Lam.), woody species
encroaching in grazing lands on the Pacific Coast of Mexico. In the
greenhouse, picloram at 0.14 and 0.28 kg ae/ha killed all
jarretadera, huinol, and guazima plants. Mixtures of picloram +
   clopyralid, dicamba, or triclopyr at 0.07 + 0.07 and 0.14 + 0.14
kg/ha also killed most plants. Trielopyr killed all huinol at 0.14
and 0.28 kg/ha but not all jarretadera or guazima. Clopyralid was
effective on jarretadera and huinol but not as effective as picloram.
Dicamba was ineffective on jurretadera and killed 88 to 100% of the
huinol and gunzima plants at 0.28 kg/ha. The palm could not be grown
in the greenhouse. In the field, foliar sprays of triclopyr or
   picloram st 0.4 and 0.3 g ae/L water, respectively, killed 70% or
more of the jarretadera, huinol and gunzima but 77% or less of the
palm. No herbicide successfully controlled jarretadera in 1988.
Hexazinone applied to the soil killed 82% or more of the palm plants
at 0.5 g ai/2.5 cm of stem diameter. Soil-applied tebuthiuron
pellets were not effective on jarretaders or palm, but the briquettes
(Brush Bullets) at 2 and 4 g/ 2.5 cm of stem diameter killed 50, 60,
and 83% or more of the huinol, palm, and guazima plants,

AB Knowledge of how resident wildlife populations respond to
brush management strategies is especially limited for rangelands in
the cross timbers vegetation type of Oklahoma. We examined how
cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus floridanus) density and habitat use
were influenced by applications of tebuthiuron or triclopyr, with and
without annual burning, on cross timbers rangeland. Line transect
flush-counts, mark-recapture livetrapping, and fecal pellet counts
were used to evaluate seasonal differences in population density
among 5 brush control treatments. Cottontail rabbits (n = 225) were
flushed along 362 km of line transects during 5 census periods.
Density in winter was consistently lower than summer for all
treatments, except for the untreated control in winter 1987. Line
transect density estimates varied from 0 to 1.975 rabbits/ha and
suggested that herbicide and annual burning treatments had a positive
influence on cottontail rabbit populations compared to untreated
controls. Mark-recapture density estimates did not differ among
treatments. Fecal pellet counts were greater on herbicide-treated
pastures than an untreated control in both spring and fall.
   Prairie-eastern redcedar (Juniperus virginiana L.) and forest-prairie
ecotone habitats were utilized greater than expected by cottontail
rabbits. Mature hardwood overstory and mixed-brush habitats were
avoided. Tebuthiuron and triclopyr effectively deceased hardwood
overstory and increased preferred habitats for cottontail rabbits.

AB The herbicides 2,4-D ((2,4-dichlorophenoxy)acetic acid),
   triclopyr ((3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinyl)-oxyacetic acid), and
   picloram (4-amino-3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinecarboxylic acid) were
applied by helicopter to test grids in mountainous southwestern
Oregon brushfields on shallow, rocky, clay loam soils. Herbicide
concentrations were observed in crown twigs and foliage, browse twigs
and foliage, litter, and soil. Initial deposits in the target area
ranged from 61 to 115% (average 82%) of the nominal dosage, with
coefficients of variation of 29-104%. Initial concentrations in
   crown foliage were 44-mg/kg for each kilogram per hectare applied;
deposits on browse foliage and litter were 38% and 74%, respectively,
of crown concentrations. Early after application, decreases were
more rapid for salt formulations than for esters. After 79 days,
decrease of all herbicides was slight in foliage, but continued in
soil. Picloram disappeared most rapidly and was least mobile,
followed by triclopyr and 2,4-D. Triclopyr and 2,4-D remained nearly
constant in foliage through winter. Disappearance was rapid in
   litter.

AB Triclopyr (3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridyl)oxyacetic acid,
Garlon 4E was moderately persistent in sandy and clay soils at a
Northern Ontario site. Times to 50% and 90% disappearance were 2 and
4 weeks, respectively, regardless of soil type. Evidence of
triclopyr leaching in response to heavy rainfall was observed 7 days
after application in both soils, but residues of triclopyr at a depth
of 25-30 cm never exceeded 6 micrograms/kg, when present. In a study
of lateral movement of triclopyr with runoff water, residues (in the
range 0.01-0.96 micrograms/L) were recovered in a collection ditch
12-13 m downslope; however, there was no evidence of mass movement of
triclopyr at quantifiable levels (0.54 micrograms/kg) downslope in
the soil. Field studies of persistence and mobility confirmed
earlier laboratory results and indicate that environmental problems
are unlikely to occur as a result of excessive triclopyr persistence
and/or mobility in soils typical of Northern Ontario forestry areas.

AB Control of tall larkspur on mountain rangelands would
substantially reduce cattle poisoning. Several herbicides were
evaluated for their control of tall larkspur in subalpine and aspen
vegetation types. Glyphosate (2.2 kg ai ha-1) and picloram (2.2 kg
ae ha-1) killed more than 88% of larkspur plants in both vegetation
types. Clopyralid and triclopyr were ineffective at comparable
rates. Metsulfuron (88 and 138 g ai ha-1) provided variable control.
Glyphosate is nonselective and killed all perennial vegetation,
except for Thurbers fescue and mountain brome in the aspen type.
Picloram applied at 4.5 kg ha-1 suppressed grasses on the subalpine
site, but allowed grasses to increase at lower rates. All herbicides

AB Several herbicides were evaluated for their ability to
control duncecap larkspur, a serious poisonous plant on mountain
rangelands in the western U.S. Duncecap larkspur density was reduced
   from 33 to 93% by triclopyr applied at 2.2, 4.5, and 9.0 kg ae/ha.
Picloram applied at 2.2 and 4.5 kg ae/ha reduced density from 33 to
   99%. Metsulfuron applied at 86 and 138 g ai/ha reduced density from
50 to 98%. Glyphosate was the most effective herbicide, reducing
density by 90 to 100% when applied at 2.2 kg ai/ha. Glyphosate
reduced the cover of grasses and perennial forbs but increased cover
of annual forbs. All rates of picloram and metsulfuron reduced forb
cover. Grass cover increased in most plots where duncecap larkspur
   and forbs were reduced.

marginally effective on Macartney rose, killing 15 to 43% of the
plants at 1.12 kg ha, but ineffective on honey mesquite and huisache,
killing no more than 10% of the plants at 1.12 kg ha. Sulfometuron
was ineffective on all woody species at 1.12 kg ai ha. Clopyralid
and picloram were effective, killing 70 to 92% of the huisache at
2.24 kg ae ha. Tebuthiuron killed 72% of the Texas whitebrush at
1.12 kg ai ha. Sulfometuron generally reduced herbaceous plant cover
the year of application. Chlorsulfuron and metsulfuron often
resulted in increased grass cover the year of application. Most
herbicides reduced broadleaf weeds the year of application. Woolly
croton often was the first prominent broadleaf species to return to
areas treated with clopyralid and sulfometuron. Few differences
occurred among herbicides in herbaceous weed cover the year following
   treatment.

AB Acifluorfen
   (5-2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy-2-nitrobenzoic acid applied
alone and in mixtures with propanil
N-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)propanamide reduced rough grain yield of rice
(Oryza sativa L. 'Lebonnet' or 'Bond') by 7% when applied at the
late-booting or heading growth stages, averaged over several rates
of application. Earlier applications did not reduce rice yield.
The highest rate (0.6 kg ai/ha) of acifluorfen alone and in mixtures
with propanil at 3.4 kg ai/ha reduced grain yields more than lower
   rates (0.1 or 0.3 kg ai/ha). Triclopyr
((3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinyl)oxy acetic acid) alone and in mixtures
with propanil reduced rough grain yields of rice by 18% when applied
at the late-booting growth stage, averaged over several rates of
applications, but did not affect yields when applied at the
early-tillering, jointing, or early-booting growth stages.
Whole-grain milling yield and germination of rice seed were not
affected by acifluorfen or triclopyr alone or in mixtures with
propanil, regardless of rate or growth stage of application.

AB Greenhouse studies were conducted to determine the extent
of translocation from the foliage to fleshy roots, inherent
toxicity, and the fate of radiolabeled and nonlabeled dicamba,
picloram, and triclopyr in horsenettle. Roots of horsenettle acted
as the major sink for photosynthate accumulation at the 0.2- to
0.5-bloom growth stages as determined by autoradiography. Dicamba,
picloram, and triclopyr were translocated into the roots of
horsenettle and accumulation continued for at least 16 days. 14C
associated with each herbicide found in the roots ranged from 1.3%
at 4 days to 3.8% at 16 days. After 16 days, slightly more 14C from
plants treated with dicamba and triclopyr (3.8 and 3.6%) than
picloram (3.0%) was translocated to roots. These compounds were
metabolized slowly in the foliage and roots as determined by
thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and autoradiography. In
translocation studies with horsenettle shoots, picloram at 1.12
kg/ha killed the treated and untreated shoots and roots. Dicamba
and triclopyr at the highest rates killed the treated shoots and
partially destroyed the root system. Symptoms were noted on the
untreated shoots, but full recovery occurred at 8 weeks. Since each
of the herbicides was metabolized slowly and only slight differences
in their translocation were observed, the relatively higher
herbicidal effectiveness of picloram must be attributed to its
   greater inherent potency. Nomenclature: dicamba,
   3,6-dichloro-2-methoxybenzoic acid; picloram,
   4-amino-3,5,6,-trichloro-2-pyridinecarboxylic acid; triclopyr,
(3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinyl)oxy acetic acid; Solanum carolinense L.

AB Abstract: Acifluorfen
   (5-2-chloro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenoxy-2-nitrobenzoic acid) applied
alone and in mixtures with propanil
N-(3,4-dichlorophenyl)propanamide reduced rough grain yield of rice
(Oryza sativa L. 'Lebonnet' or 'Bond') by 7% when applied at the
late-booting or heading growth stages, averaged over several rates
of application. Earlier applications, did not reduce rice yield.
The highest rate (0.6 kg ai/ha) of acifluorfen alone and in mixtures
with propanil at 3.4 kg ai/ha) reduced grain yields more than lower
   rates (0.1 or 0.3 kg ai/ha). Triclopyr
((3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinyl)oxyacetic acid) alone and in mixtures
with propanil reduced rough grain yields of rice by 18% when applied
at the late-booting growth stage, averaged over several rates, of
applications, but did not affect yields when applied at the
early-tillering, jointing, or early-booting growth stages.
Whole-grain milling yield and germination of rice seed were not
affected by acifluorfen or triclopyr alone or in mixtures with
propanil, regardless of rate or growth stage of application.
