Dear Mr. Vatne:
Re: Registration of a Major Change in Label for the Active Ingredient -
Hexaflumuron contained in the Pesticide Product Recruit II
(EPA. Reg. No. 62719-272)
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) has
accepted your application for the registration of the pesticide product
Recruit II (EPA Reg. No. 62719-272), with 0.5% of the active ingredient
hexaflumuron in New York State.
Hexaflumuron is an insect growth regulator and is contained in a bait
labeled for use in an integrated pest management system (Sentricon System) to
control subterranean termites outside homes, buildings, fences, landscape
plantings and other structures susceptible to termite damage. Recruit
containing 0.1% hexaflumuron was registered by this Department as a general
use pesticide on January 10, 1995. Recruit II contains 0.5% hexaflumuron.
The data package for this product was reviewed by the Division of Fish &
Wildlife (DF&W), the Geotechnical Support Section (GTS), and the New York
State Department of Health (NYSDOH).
The DF&W Bureau of Environmental Protection (BEP) did not object to
registration of the increase of Hexaflumuron from 0.1% to 0.5% due to the
contained bait pattern of Recruit II. The fish and wildlife of New York State
should not be harmed from its use.
The NYSDOH stated in their review that they had previously reviewed this
active ingredient and were able to complete their review in a shorter time
frame than usual. Although use of Recruit II increases the amount of active
ingredient per structure five-fold over the use of Recruit, the amount of
active ingredient applied is still significantly less than that applied in the
conventional termiticide treatments. In addition, the active ingredient is
contained in a bait which is placed in a plastic station below ground level
only when termites are actively feeding at the site. Given the low exposure
potential of hexaflumuron in the Sentricon System, NYSDOH does not object to
the registration of Recruit II in New York State.
The GTS stated they had no objection to the registration of Recruit II
(EPA Reg. No. 62719-272). As labeled, the active ingredient is very unlikely
to contact the surrounding soil.
Therefore, after consideration of the above reviews, the Department
accepts for registration the pesticide product Recruit II (EPA Reg. No. 62719-
272), containing 0.5% hexaflumuron for use in New York State as labeled.
Enclosed for your records are the stamped-accepted label and the
certificate of registration for the above product.
If you have any questions on this matter, please contact Maureen
Serafini, Supervisor of our Pesticide Product Registration Section, at (518)
457-7446.
Sincerely,
Norman H. Nosenchuck, P.E.
